Environmental Security Assessment (ESA)
Technical Explanation
An Environmental Security Assessment evaluates the robustness of facilities and operations against environmental risks and “security” threats (natural or man-made). It often involves a compliance gap analysis – checking if a site has appropriate containment, spill response, pollution controls, etc. – and identifies vulnerabilities that could lead to environmental incidents. Essentially, it’s ensuring the site’s assets and processes are secured from causing or suffering environmental harm.
Main requirements
Often needed for industrial facilities, oil & gas sites, or critical infrastructure to prevent environmental accidents. Needs thorough site inspections (tanks, drainage, secondary containment) and review of maintenance records. The main requirement is to identify any weaknesses (e.g. lack of bunding, outdated emergency plans) so the operator can fortify them and thus “secure” the environment and comply with standards.
